The artwork of Michael Galovic follows three streams of imagery: Classic Icons, Religious Artwork and Non Religious Artwork which feature his fascination with the Greek myth of Icarus and with the form of rocks such as Uluru.

In the book ICONS + ART: MICHAEL GALOVIC, these three directions are explored through myriad examples of interesting imagery.

ON ICARUS ...

Most people can identify themselves with the idea of flying, of being free, high up somewhere in space. Soaring like an eagle is both romantic and noble, often the dream of many. However, as Brazilian author Paulo Coelho said: "You can fulfil your dream but be prepared to pay the price for it". In Greek mythology, Daedalus and his son Icarus are escaping imprisonment in the labyrinth of the deadly Minotaur, the half-man, half-bull servant of King Minos. The father, architect of both the labyrinth and their escape, designs wings made of feathers fixed with wax to fly away. Daedalus warns his son not to fly too close to the sun, but soon, Icarus becomes inebriated with his newly acquired power. Not wanting to be restrained, he seeks to fly ever higher, beyond all boundaries to man. He forgets he is human, for he dares trespass into the realm of Gods. Flying too close to the sun melts the wax and so Icarus tumbles into the sea and drowns.

"My point is that freedom is as fictional as it may seem real. We are all guided by so many factors ... genetics, our own make-up, our passions and our ambitions, so that we are conditioned and restrained to our own microcosm. It is possible to break the pattern but one should always be aware of what lies within a person's framework and not play God. In artistic terms, my interest is in depicting the body floating in space, sometimes ascending, sometimes falling. Now, that winged body assumes for me an angelic image. It is something which unconsciously brings me back to the traditional iconic world".
