IT'S A WRAP! The museum store is the place to go for that special gift. Whether it's for a child, adult, senior or a corporate gift, museum stores offer a one stop shopping experience. Most products available reflect the mission statement of the museum. They tell a story. They sell a story. They enhance the museum visitor's experience. Museum Imagineers offers quality product development services to many institutions worldwide. Items such as BookMarks, MyMouseMats, quality pens etc. are examples of the wide variety of items available. Premium gifts can be value added with items like jewellery made out of precious metals, apparel, accents and accessories. Many museum stores feature collectables from local and well known artists, often attracting high price points. It's a win-win for everyone. Many people seeking that special gift will meet or exceed their expectations by visiting a museum store. There is an increasing trend for corporate gifts to be sourced in this way. As an added benefit, proceeds from merchandise sales in museum stores support museums and their programs. Quite often people are prepared to pay a premium with the assurance that their purchase is funding the initiatives of non profit institutions. GEORGE JAKSIC & EAMON FENWICK
PREMIUM POSTCARDS
Generally, the highest selling paper product in a museum store is a PostCard. These are versatile items which carry a low price point but have a high education and marketing value. The most popular PostCard shows the front facade of the museum. A "hero" shot is creative at an interesting angle, perhaps featuring some building embellishment or distinctive signage which reminds the museum visitor of the institution. Many PostCards often end up on fridge doors or scrap books as a memento of a trip's highlights. That is why it is important to ensure that photography is of high quality and on the back, apart from the usual free zones for an address, a message, and postal service encoding area, the best PostCards have an annotated caption. This can tell a story in say 20-30 words about the institution apart from just being a simple caption or tagline. Producing a series of quality PostCards offers the visitor a choice and stimulates sales. Art institutions usually carry the widest range of PostCards which feature images of their extensive collections. Museum stores which offer stamps at cost price (national and international) at their point of sale tend to increase their volume of PostCard sales. This is becoming best practice worldwide. Museum Imagineers offers full production services for the development of distinctive PostCards and other collateral paper products. GeoGraphics Group was recently commissioned to produce Christmas cards for the 2005 season. Manufactured in Australia from recycled material, part of the production cost of the cards proudly supports the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children. Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer sits at the helm of an extended bicycle with Santa at the rear. Do consider your own corporate cards to wish a Merry Christmas to your corporate clients, family and friends. Personalized greetings may be overprinted inside the cards. NATIONAL UNDERGROUND RAILROAD FREEDOM CENTER
There are magnificent interactive exhibits which reveal human rights and contemporary slavery issues, including storytelling which illuminates freedom struggles worldwide. A major feature is a 19th century slave pen. While visiting, George Jaksic and Eamon Fenwick were most impressed with poignant short films which are screened daily at the museum. There is an extensive museum gift shop located on the ground level opposite the main riverside entrance which features arts and crafts.
